Spruce up the neighbourhood 2021
On Sunday May 16th, we hosted our annual Spruce up the Neighbourhood event. Although our event looked a little different this year, our community was still able to come together in a covid safe drive through drop off event. All community residents had the opportunity to take advantage of many services to help clean out their homes and yards. Approximately 300 plus residents attended our drive thru event.
Services that were available this year for our residents:
Battery Recycling – 4 Home Depot orange buckets were filled with household batteries that were delivered to Home Depot for environmentally responsible recycling
Electronic Recycling – filled a 15 ft truck box, keeping these old electronics out of the landfills
Shredding – Collected 8 large shredding bins of papers/files, keeping paper out of the landfills and saving trees
Clothing – Collected 5 large bins and 7 extra large bags of clothing that was donated to Cerebral Palsy
Kids sporting equipment – Collected a large amount of gently used sporting equipment including skates, helmets, hockey sticks, baseball gloves, soccer balls, footballs, scooters, bikes and toboggans that were donated to the Cerebral Palsy
Paint – Collected 2 truckloads of paint and hazardous chemicals that were safely disposed at the landfill
Park Clean up – 5 individuals spent approximately 1 hour collecting garbage in the adjacent City of Calgary sports fields and WHCA green space
Garbage – collected 2 – 30 yard garbage bins with items that are too big for home black bins
Our event is focused primarily on recycling, therefore during the day items that were dropped off for garbage that were in a gently used condition were placed aside and posted for free pickup in our community facebook group allowing us to put even less into the landfill.
Thank you to everyone who participated in Spruce up the neighbourhood 2021!
