New & Returning External WHCA Programs

The West Hillhurst Community Association is a 70,000 square foot facility, which means we have room for a TON of activities. While we try to provide as much family-friendly programming as we can for the community, we also provide rental spaces for external programs to run within the facility (since it would be almost impossible for us to fill these rooms just ourselves!).

Some of our external renters have been with us fairly long-term. For more info on them, you can check out the External Programs page on our website. They include:

  • Go-Getters 50+
  • Pickleball
  • NCHL
  • Summit Kids
  • Balletiques
  • and more.

Be sure to check out their separate descriptions and websites, available on the External Programs page.

We are also always looking for new renters to run programs! For instance, right now we provide space for fencing, karate, dance, fitness, and more! If you’re ever looking for more information on a program, class, or course offered at the WHCA, stop by the facility or give us a call and we will be happy to assist you as best we can.

If you’ve got ideas for programming you’d like to see at the WHCA, let us know! We want to have something for everyone.

Green Shirt Day at the WHCA

Join the WHCA in support of Green Shirt Day 2019! On Sunday, April 7th, we will be having a free community event from 3 to 5 pm in conjunction with Green Shirt Day in order to raise awareness for organ & tissue donation in honour of the “Logan Boulet Effect.”

“On April 7, 2018, Humboldt Broncos defenceman, Logan Boulet succumbed to his injuries, his parents, Bernadine and Toby Boulet offered to donate his organs so that six lives could live on. They did so, because Logan told his parents, he was registering as an organ donor, and that he was inspired by his coach and mentor Ric Suggitt. Ric passed on June 27th, 2017 and was also an organ donor and saved 6 lives.

As news spread of the organ donation, by this young hockey player, over 100,000 people registered to become organ donors in the days and weeks that followed. To date this is the largest number of Canadians registering to become organ donors in Canadian History due to one event – one person.

Green Shirt Day, hopes to honour, remember, and recognize all the victims and families of that fatal crash, and to continue Logan’s legacy, by inspiring Canadians to talk to their families and register as organ donors.

In Canada, almost 90% of Canadians say they support organ donation, but only 23% have actually registered their intent to donate. Though donation rates have improved over the last ten years, there is more to be done as approximately 250 Canadians die annually waiting for an organ transplant.”

The WHCA’s Green Shirt Day event will feature free food and beverages supplied by our friends at the Barn Pub and Sunterra Market. Calgary Flames alumni Jamie Hislop will be in attendance and available for photos & autographs. We will wrap up the event with a free public skate in the WHCA Arena from 4 to 5 pm.

So rock a green shirt and come on by on April 7th and show your support for this great cause!

Walk In Her Shoes with the WHCA

This Sunday, March 10th, join members of the WHCA staff as they participate in the Walk In Her Shoes Challenge from 12 to 3 pm at the Calgary zoo.

The Walk In Her Shoes Challenge was created to celebrate International Women’s Day which falls on March 8 this year. Women and girls in developing countries must walk an average of 10,000 steps every day to collect the basics their families need to survive. This challenge is to encourage Calgarians to walk in solidarity with these women and girls and raise awareness and funds to aid in breaking the cycle of poverty.

So please drop-in to this event on Sunday and join WHCA staff in raising awareness! The afternoon features a 5,000 step mapped walk around the zoo featuring prizes, games, crafts, and activities for the kids. Only $25 to cover your registration plus 3 guests, which grants you all admission into the Calgary Zoo.

For details and registration, visit care.ca/calgarywalks. Preregistration is required.

See you there!

Spring Programs are Right Around the Corner!

If you’re the type of person who likes to get outside to enjoy the nice spring weather and take part in a fun & competitive sport while you’re at it (which, let’s face it, is practically everyone!) then the WHCA can help you with that this coming spring! Registrations are now open for both the 2019 Spring Soccer & Tennis Lessons programming! Both of these programs are held outside at the WHCA and are accessible to a wide variety of age groups.

WHCA Soccer

Soccer at the WHCA kicks off April 23 for ages 3 to 12. Multiple programs available in the afternoons. For more information on what soccer programs are available, pricing, dates, and registration links, visit westhillhurst.com/whca-soccer.  You can also contact soccer@westhillhurst.com if you have any questions, inquiries, or are looking to get involved.

Tennis Lessons

Spring Tennis lessons beginning April 29 are open for registration. With availability for ages 4 & up (including adult!), this is the perfect opportunity to get acquainted with the sport. Already on your way to being the next Wimbledon champion? Consider taking the intermediate & advanced lessons for adults. These lessons are taught by tennis pro Alicia Hampshire and you’re sure to leave the court a better player than when you stepped on. Visit westhillhurst.com/tennis for more information & registration.

Dungeons and Dragons for Beginners

If you’ve ever wanted to get introduced to tabletop role-playing games, here’s your chance. First Monday of the month, The Ship and Anchor hosts Entry Level Dungeons and Dragons from 5 to 10 p.m.

Get acquainted with DnD as well as other tabletop RPGs with a group of like-minded adventurers. Learn the basics about what the game is, how it works, and ways to play with hands-on experience. Not quite ready to jump into a role? Attendees are welcome to sit and watch the adventures unfold.

Dungeons and Dragons is more than just nerds reading lore and rolling dice. It is partly that, but it’s also enthralling and entertaining storytelling and game play that’s guaranteed to suck you in.

Check out the next session on February 4th at the Ship and Anchor. To sign up or if you’ve got questions, contact shipdandd@gmail.com

Looking for a fresh start in 2019? Or maybe you finished 2018 in strong spirits and want to carry that momentum with you into the new year? Well, we hear ya!

Nothing encourages well-being and positivity like practicing tai chi! For the new year, we’ve essentially doubled the tai chi offerings available at the WHCA by adding a Wednesday session, beginning January 9th. Our Saturday tai chi is still available and still free for WHCA members, but due to the success and positive feedback we received from this program, we were compelled to start a this second tai chi program for just $4 per session.

Not acquainted with tai chi? No worries! This unique martial art exercises both body and mind through movement and meditation. Our sessions are suitable for both practiced and new participants and can be as challenging as you wish to make it.

So start your 2019 with a healthy body AND mind! Register for our tai chi sessions TODAY: Saturday Tai Chi — Wednesday Tai Chi
