Ice is in and Ready to Go!

It’s August, and with the start of the new month we’ve got some new ice in the arena! We spent the better part of July taking the old stuff out and putting a new sheet down from the ground up. Everything about the ice is new, including the new sponsor logos and lines.

With new ice comes new Free Skate and Sticks & Pucks times, so keep an eye on our social media and the arena schedules page to find out when those are coming up.

NO WHCA MEMBER FREE SKATE IN AUGUST

PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE WILL BE NO FREE MEMBER SKATES AND STICKS/ PUCKS FOR THE MONTH OF AUGUST.  THE ARENA ICE SURFACE WILL BE UNDER MAINTENANCE.  THE SCHEDULED ARENA WORK IS DURING AUGUST 3 – SEPTEMBER 10, 2018.  NEW SKATE TIMES WILL BE RELEASED IN EARLY SEPTEMBER IF THE WEST HILLHURST COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION STAYS WITHIN THE SCHEDULED CLOSURE.

Hybrid Hockey League

The West Hillhurst Community Association is proud to host the 2018 Spring Cross-Ice 3-on-3 League (+ stick-handling camp and detailed skating lessons).

 

Keep your skills and talent sharp over the spring / summer months and learn the benefits of Cross-Ice hockey.  As stated by Hockey Canada, “the difference in skill-development opportunities with cross-ice or half-ice hockey are significant:  players receive five times more passes and take six times more shots.  They’re called on to have to make more decisions more quickly and are overall, more engaged in the game.
“Skater aren’t the only ones seeing an increase in action; the goalies are also learning more quickly the basics of better body positioning.  Our goalies are actually exhausted at the end.  Instead of facing 15 shots, they’re facing 20 to 30 shots every nine minutes.  It’s just shot after shot after shot at them.”

Games will be played in each end-zone and the neutral-zone will be used each Tuesday to teach detailed balance and edge work.  Each of the sessions will be taught taught by one of three professional figure skating coaches.  These are individual lessons as there will be at least two coaches per ice time.  There will also be a full one hour session on May 3.  These sessions are included in the cost of the league.

There are multiple age and skill divisions available at a cost of $350.00 that includes 13,  one (1) hour ice times on Tuesdays & Thursdays during April 10 – May 29, 2018.  For more information or to register, contact info@hybridhockey.ca

Be BRAVE – Anti-Bullying Game

The Calgary Hitmen come together in the promotion of anti-bullying and acceptance event open to the entire family.  The event will help teach children and teens the importance of standing up to bullies and prevention.

In today’s world, bullying can happen in many forms.  From technology to personal bullying, this program helps to educate people of the importance of reducing and eliminating the psychological damaging occurrence.  We, at WHCA support this imitative and hope your family attends this event.
