Green Shirt Day at the WHCA

Join the WHCA in support of Green Shirt Day 2019! On Sunday, April 7th, we will be having a free community event from 3 to 5 pm in conjunction with Green Shirt Day in order to raise awareness for organ & tissue donation in honour of the “Logan Boulet Effect.”

“On April 7, 2018, Humboldt Broncos defenceman, Logan Boulet succumbed to his injuries, his parents, Bernadine and Toby Boulet offered to donate his organs so that six lives could live on. They did so, because Logan told his parents, he was registering as an organ donor, and that he was inspired by his coach and mentor Ric Suggitt. Ric passed on June 27th, 2017 and was also an organ donor and saved 6 lives.

As news spread of the organ donation, by this young hockey player, over 100,000 people registered to become organ donors in the days and weeks that followed. To date this is the largest number of Canadians registering to become organ donors in Canadian History due to one event – one person.

Green Shirt Day, hopes to honour, remember, and recognize all the victims and families of that fatal crash, and to continue Logan’s legacy, by inspiring Canadians to talk to their families and register as organ donors.

In Canada, almost 90% of Canadians say they support organ donation, but only 23% have actually registered their intent to donate. Though donation rates have improved over the last ten years, there is more to be done as approximately 250 Canadians die annually waiting for an organ transplant.”

The WHCA’s Green Shirt Day event will feature free food and beverages supplied by our friends at the Barn Pub and Sunterra Market. Calgary Flames alumni Jamie Hislop will be in attendance and available for photos & autographs. We will wrap up the event with a free public skate in the WHCA Arena from 4 to 5 pm.

So rock a green shirt and come on by on April 7th and show your support for this great cause!

Italy Coast-to-Coast

Come and celebrate the delicious food and wine from four amazing cities across Italy, Chef Justin Lall will design a four-course menu inspired from each of our chosen cities in Italy.

Beginning in the south we will start with the famous coastal city of Naples on March 20, the capital of Campania and third largest city in Italy. Naples is internationally famous for its cuisine and wine, known for the rich flavours and inventing the Neopolican pizza.

Next we will move up to the historic city of Rome on May 22, the capital of Italy, Rome has the third highest density of residents in Europe. Rome’s food flavours are vast and influenced from many of its surrounding regions and countries.

For the summer we head off to the region of Tuscany to enjoy the city of Florence on July 24th, if the weather is nice we may dine al fresco on the patio (TBD). Florence cuisine is very comfort based and is heavily focused on meat and wine, Tuscany is one of the most famous regions of Italian wine with big flavour.

We will finish our fourth dinner on October 23 with a fall inspired menu with the northern city of Milan which is knows as the design capital of the world. Milan has developed its own local culinary traditions typical for North Italian cuisines uses more rice than pasta and many braised meats.

Each ticket includes a welcome glass of prosecco, a four-course plated dinner inspired by the region of each city, hospitality and tax. You can choose to include wine pairings for each course, picked from each of the regions to complement each dish.

Seating is limited as we will only be selling 40 tickets to each of these dinners, so make sure to purchase your tickets early. In the true style of Italy we will be dining at four communal tables for the evening to enjoy conversation with others.

Naples – March 20

Rome – May 22

Florence – July 24

Milan – October 23
