Looking for a fresh start in 2019? Or maybe you finished 2018 in strong spirits and want to carry that momentum with you into the new year? Well, we hear ya!

Nothing encourages well-being and positivity like practicing tai chi! For the new year, we’ve essentially doubled the tai chi offerings available at the WHCA by adding a Wednesday session, beginning January 9th. Our Saturday tai chi is still available and still free for WHCA members, but due to the success and positive feedback we received from this program, we were compelled to start a this second tai chi program for just $4 per session.

Not acquainted with tai chi? No worries! This unique martial art exercises both body and mind through movement and meditation. Our sessions are suitable for both practiced and new participants and can be as challenging as you wish to make it.

Bye 2018, Hello 2019

2018 was a stellar year for the West Hillhurst Community Association. We saw success with new programs and old, had great engagement with community members, and hosted some fantastic events. All of those great accomplishments were thanks to WHCA members and community members like you, so from all of us at the WHCA, THANK YOU!

We hope to carry our success onward throughout 2019 by making our New Years Resolution to continue to provide great family-friendly programming and events, as well as some other great changes we will be announcing throughout the coming year. WHCA is Serving Up Youth Volleyball

Know someone between the ages of 10 to 14 years who’s looking to learn the basics of volleyball or hone their existing skills this winter? West Hillhurst Community Association is offering a 7-week Youth Volleyball program from January 17 to February 28 that can help with that!

They will join a certified volleyball instructor for one hour from 4:30 to 5:30 pm, Thursdays throughout winter. Not only will they learn the rules and fundamentals of volleyball, but also take part in drills to acquire greater control and expertise when it comes to setting, serving, and spiking! Volleyball is a great way to practice coordination, team-play, and stay active.

Neighbourhood Baby Connections 2019

Are you a parent or parental support figure for a baby under 2 years old? Awesome! Let us help you make the most of this time in your lives with “Neighbourhood Baby Connections.”

This new WHCA program is geared towards meeting people in your neighbourhood and making those connections. Its a great way to meet other people with babies who are going through similar experiences, while educational guest speakers will come in to provide the educational/movement part of the class.

This is ideal for newborns and young babies, as well as all parental support (dads. moms, grandparents, sister, caregiver, etc) who are just looking for have fun, take in some quality bonding time, and get to know some of your neighbours!

This program is FREE with a WHCA membership, which you can purchase here. If you have a WHCA membership, you can register for the program here.

Class structure: The first 15 min will allow for baby time to get settled in (feed, change diapers etc). The following 45 mins will be the special guest of the day, it will be either educational or activity based. Followed by 15 min discussion of the day for the parents and for babies to explore and play. The last 15 min will be to mingle and to clean up the space. A week prior to the class start date a list of educational guests will be sent out.

Each week will be different and some of the educational guest could be but not limited to, the list of special guests will be confirmed a week before the class starts:
– Active classes (Parent and Baby Yoga, Baby Barre etc.)
– A visit from our local library
– Dental hygiene for babies
– WHCA preschool
– Post Natal Pelvic Floor & Core Physio
– Baby music and or dance
– Baby massage
– Our local pharmacist to answer Q & A’s

Changes are Coming to the WHCA Health Club!

We are excited to share with you the new changes that are taking place at the WHCA Health Club in 2019. Instead of offering limited-time monthly promotions for health club classes, the WHCA is instead offering unlimited-time discounts for group fitness classes. You can participate in the great group fitness classes for only $13 per class with WHCA members receiving an additional 10% off the regular price. This great discount includes the brand new spin classes offered in the new year.

The new line-up of programs are currently open for registration, so be sure to check them out and take advantage of the new promotions! This is the perfect opportunity to get a head-start on your health and fitness goals for the new year. Girlfriend FitnessMonday Afternoon

Girlfriend Fitness is a fun, high energy workout and excellent cross training. Learn how to exercise properly, gain confidence and build a strong healthy body. Classes will incorporate strength, endurance and cardiovascular fitness using body weight & dumbbells, as well as spin bikes. All levels welcome. Push Up Yoga – Wednesday Afternoon
Based on the 8 limbs of yoga, focuses on the complete practice of yoga and merges the breath, mind, body. Vandana will include warm up exercises, followed by asana practice, finishing up with relaxation and meditation/mindfulness exercises.

Ride & Ripped – Wednesday Evening
This class will get your heart pumping and muscles glowing with this group cycling/strength class. This low impact class can accommodate all ability levels, where participants can modify the bikes and weight resistance to meet their own personal workout/training needs. Bring your energy, water bottle and prepare to have a blast in this 50-minute class.

“Make It Calgary” Expo

Need some gift ideas or to wrap-up some holiday shopping? Check out “Make It Calgary.” This travelling expo will be visiting Deerfoot City with over 130 vendors from December 6th to the 9th and makes for a great opportunity to put a dent in a special someone’s wish-list. Strictly showcasing handmade goods, market vendors feature whatever gift ideas you’re looking for; from clothes, candles, home decor, jewelry, and much more.

The expo hours are:
Thursday and Friday – 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Saturday – 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Sunday – 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The market can be found in Building N, around the corner from the Rec Room.

Our heath and fitness isn’t always our top priority during the busy holiday season. The Health Club at the WHCA has a great line-up of classes this December to help you work off those Christmas-calories. Keep yourself and your family healthy these holidays with a little a little help from us.

Happy Halloween

It’s finally here!  The costumes are out, the candy bags ready and the kids are buzzing with excitement.   Halloween is usually a kids second favourite time of the year where they can use their imaginations and portray their favourite cartoon characters, super heros or an evil costume to scare the neighbours!  It’s all about fun and collecting enough candy to at least last a week.

The West Hillhurst Community Association wants to remind the public, parents and trick-or-treat’ers to keep in mind their surroundings and traffic that will be out that night.  As reported on SafeRides4Kids, here are some suggestions to ensure the safety of you, your children and drivers out on the roads for the evening.

“Sure there are the monsters and gruesome decorations intended to scare people but overall most children look forward to dressing up and trick or treating for candy.

“There are, however, some things we parents should be frightened of on Halloween and, no, statistically speaking, tainted candy is not one of them. Here are some things to be aware of and some quick tips for a safe Halloween.”

DANGER #1

Poor visibility and dark costumes often result in accidents. As a matter of fact, children are four times more likely to be hit by a car on Halloween than any other night. These collisions result in double the number of pedestrian fatalities than the average night.

Safety tips:

  • 70% of these accidents occur away from an intersection or crosswalk, so always cross the street at the corner where you will be more visible and make eye contact with drivers.
  • Walk in groups and have kids use glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.
  • Children under age 12 should have adult supervision. If older kids are mature enough to be out without supervision, plan a route with them staying in well-lit, familiar areas and remind them to trick-or-treat in groups and return home at a specified time.
  • Make sure costumes fit properly to prevent tripping.
  • Masks might obstruct a child’s vision, try non-toxic face paint and makeup instead.
  • Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers.

If you are the driver:

  • Slow down.
  • Most children trick-or-treat from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. (and 60% of the pedestrian accidents happen) so be especially alert for kids during those hours.
  • Put your phone away while driving.
  • If you have been drinking, have someone else drive.

DANGER #2

There is an increase in burns during Halloween also.

Safety tips:

  • Use battery-powered tea lights instead of real candles in your pumpkins.

  • Candlelit pumpkins should be placed on a sturdy table away from flammable objects and where little feet won’t trip over them or kick them over, and should never be left unattended.

  • Make sure your children’s costumes are made of fire-retardant materials.

“In general, use common sense; only go to people’s homes where it is obvious they are participating in trick-or-treating because their home is lit and oftentimes decorated. And be courteous; stay off people’s lawns, don’t push younger kids out of the way at doors and say “thank you”.”

Pride: A Conversation

Join your WHCA during Calgary Pride Week (August 24 – September 3, 2018) at Pride:  A Conversation.  This informational session will focus on a couple key areas:

During Calgary Pride celebrations, the WHCA is hosting an informational session and Q&A with a panel of seven (7) interesting LGTBQ+ Calgarians. This discussion is open to everyone.

Our Goals:

– Build community and increase inclusion within West Hillhurst.

– Increase awareness and understanding about:
– Sexuality and gender issues
– Calgary’s LGTBQ+ community

– Provide attendees with local LGTBQ+ resources / services*

Join us on August 29, 2018 from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at West Hillhurst Community Association.  Registration is required by noon on August 29, however, we will be accepting drop-ins.  Registers will have a chance to win a door price.  If registration limits are not reached, this program will NOT run.
