Walk In Her Shoes with the WHCA

This Sunday, March 10th, join members of the WHCA staff as they participate in the Walk In Her Shoes Challenge from 12 to 3 pm at the Calgary zoo.

The Walk In Her Shoes Challenge was created to celebrate International Women’s Day which falls on March 8 this year. Women and girls in developing countries must walk an average of 10,000 steps every day to collect the basics their families need to survive. This challenge is to encourage Calgarians to walk in solidarity with these women and girls and raise awareness and funds to aid in breaking the cycle of poverty.

So please drop-in to this event on Sunday and join WHCA staff in raising awareness! The afternoon features a 5,000 step mapped walk around the zoo featuring prizes, games, crafts, and activities for the kids. Only $25 to cover your registration plus 3 guests, which grants you all admission into the Calgary Zoo.

For details and registration, visit care.ca/calgarywalks. Preregistration is required.

See you there!

Volunteer for Casino Night!

The WHCA will be hosting a Casino Night Fundraiser at Cowboy’s Casino the evenings of May 5th & 6th. In order for the casino to run smoothly and for us to make the most of our time there, we require a number of volunteers for supervising, running chips, cashiers, and more! There is a variety of shifts available for both the Sunday and the Monday nights, and at the time of this post we’ve managed to fill around half of the spots. If you’d like to see what positions and times are available, please stop by the office or the fitness club, give us a call, or send us an email and we will be happy to find you a role that fits your schedule!

We’ve tried to make the sign-up process as smooth as possible. All we’ll need is your name & phone number via either phone call, email, or form. You can also find a sign-up sheet in both the office and at the fitness club front desk. If there is a role/time taken that you had wanted, please feel free to sign-up as a backup. We understand that life happens and commitments fall through, so don’t sweat it!

Visit us at 1940 6th Ave NW, call 403.283.0464 or email admin@westhillhurst.com for more info.

February Health Club Updates

Here’s your brief February update of some of the new additions and changes that have been made to the health club so far in 2019!

First and foremost, due to feedback from health club members, we will be opening the doors half an hour earlier during weekday mornings. This means you will be able to access the health club at 6:30 am instead of 7 am so you’ll have an opportunity to get your workout in to kick off your day! This is why feedback is so important from our members because it allows us to provide you with the services you want and makes us the best Community Association we can be! So thanks to all who spoke up!

There is now Black Knight squash equipment available for purchase/rental in the health club! Equipment includes 3 different racquets, eye guards, grips, wraps, and more! We want the health club to be your one-stop shop for all things squash, and with these new additions, we’re almost there. Stop by the front desk today and check out the new squash display for yourself, there’s some great stuff available.

We are now offering 45-minute squash training sessions for only $5! These group squash clinics are available Tuesday mornings at 9:30 and 10:30 am. Due to the nature of this program, it will have limited spots and it’s strictly first-come first-serve. For $5, you’ll certainly get your money’s worth as you’ll learn skills from our fantastic squash pros, hands-on! Must be a WHCA Member to participate.

Also, don’t forget that throughout 2019, group fitness classes will all have a $13 drop-in fee, no membership required. That means you don’t have to commit, you can bring a friend or family member along, or try something new for just $13! Also, members receive 10% off registration for group fitness classes. Keep these changes in mind and try something new this year!

The WHCA Squash Championship has ONE spot remaining for registration, so we are keeping registration open to give members a chance to fill it! If you or a squash-playing friend doesn’t want to miss their opportunity to be the next Squash Champ, register TODAY and don’t get stuck waiting around until next year!

For more info on the health club throughout 2019, check the health club page, swing by the front desk, follow us on social media, or give us a call!

See you on the court.

Spring Programs are Right Around the Corner!

If you’re the type of person who likes to get outside to enjoy the nice spring weather and take part in a fun & competitive sport while you’re at it (which, let’s face it, is practically everyone!) then the WHCA can help you with that this coming spring! Registrations are now open for both the 2019 Spring Soccer & Tennis Lessons programming! Both of these programs are held outside at the WHCA and are accessible to a wide variety of age groups.

WHCA Soccer

Soccer at the WHCA kicks off April 23 for ages 3 to 12. Multiple programs available in the afternoons. For more information on what soccer programs are available, pricing, dates, and registration links, visit westhillhurst.com/whca-soccer.  You can also contact soccer@westhillhurst.com if you have any questions, inquiries, or are looking to get involved.

Tennis Lessons

Spring Tennis lessons beginning April 29 are open for registration. With availability for ages 4 & up (including adult!), this is the perfect opportunity to get acquainted with the sport. Already on your way to being the next Wimbledon champion? Consider taking the intermediate & advanced lessons for adults. These lessons are taught by tennis pro Alicia Hampshire and you’re sure to leave the court a better player than when you stepped on. Visit westhillhurst.com/tennis for more information & registration.

New Music Programming for Babies & Toddlers

This February the WHCA is proud to introduce brand-new programming for babies & tots: WHCA Music with Nynne Collins of Hummingbird Music Therapy!

Instructor Nynne combines music and song in these sessions, catering to the appropriate ages. These classes help enhance motor development, body consciousness, concentration, and memory. Music classes by Hummingbird Music Therapy can encourage the development of language, movement, attention, and sharing with others, all while having a ton of fun with music, singing, and dance!

You will find that there is nothing more engaging than an hour of interactive singing & dance with your baby and/tot. These classes will not only enrich your child’s learning, but also your relationship you share together.

Movin’ & Groovin’ Baby Music for ages 6 months to 3 years is held Thursday mornings from 9:10 to 10:10 am in Upper Studio A beginning February 21st.

Video Games at WHCA?

Have you got an interest in video games and e-sports? Would you like to see related events & programs held at the West Hillhurst Community Association?

Well for those of you who read our blog, we’ll let you in on a little secret: the WHCA is considering doing e-sports and video game related events and programming, pending feedback from the community members and potential partners.

Neat, huh?

We understand the increasing interest in video games and the passion community members have for the industry and want to provide activities at the facility to help foster that passion and interest. This can only be a reality, however, if we receive enough feedback and interest from the Calgary community.

In order to get an idea about community interest and potential involvement, we put together a very, very brief survey and would appreciate your feedback. Just click that link and fill out the survey. It should only take a minute or two depending on your answers.

Got comments and questions that weren’t addressed in the survey? Feel free to leave a comment on this post, down below.
