Grasshopper Hill & Riley Park Fitness Area Updates (Jan 2025)

Grasshopper Hill Off-Leash Park:

During engagement, citizens expressed wanting to minimize impact to the natural landscape while supporting ease of use and improved resting and gathering spaces. These improvements have been successful, as many citizens previously unable to access the park are now able to enjoy the striking views and natural environment with their dogs.

Most of the upgrades aimed at improving ease of use such as new timber steps, improved trail grades and pedestrian connections, additional seating areas, and an enhanced lookout area were completed in 2023.  In 2024, our focus was on further native plantings to enhance the ecology of the park, as well as installing new site furniture at the lookout point.

As this park is a natural area, our team of specialists have been closely monitoring the important native grass and shrub coverage in the park.  As areas become sufficiently established, we have strategically removed large portions of fencing, as recently as November 2024.  However, after evaluating the area before the snowfall, it appears that certain portions of the fencing may need to remain in place during 2025 to ensure that the native vegetation survives.

We understand that the fencing is an inconvenience for residents, and we are looking forward to removing it as soon as possible.  Protective fencing around establishing plants is a common practice that we utilize in parks across the City, as native plantings can take more than two years to establish. This approach will facilitate restoration efforts and hopefully avoid the need for re-fencing in the future.  Our City team and contractor are continually monitoring the fencing for the safety for human and canine park users.  Again, we appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation in this important restoration work.

Riley Fitness Area:

We are excited to share that the Riley Park Fitness Area is now complete.  The fitness equipment is in place and ready to use and you will also notice a beautiful new planting bed.

The Parks Foundation Calgary Program is hoping to install donor benches in the area in 2025.  Donors have the opportunity of a 10-year dedication, offering a 10-year maintenance plan to one of the City benches.  If you are interested in a memorial bench at Riley Park, please contact dedication@parksfdn.com

Also, look out for fitness classes on the new equipment in spring 2025!
