Make a Difference in Your Community

There are plenty of great ways for you to get involved in the West Hillhurst community; volunteering, becoming a member, participating in local events/fundraisers, and much, much more. There is almost no better way to have your voice heard and make an impact, however, than joining the board of directors at the WHCA!

By becoming a board member, you have a direct impact and say on the goings-on within the WHCA facility. The minimum requirements for becoming a board member is you must live within the West Hillhurst community and be able to attend the 10 2-hour monthly meetings in the WHCA Boardroom. It also helps if you have a community-first mindset and are motivated to make positive change happen in our community.

We currently have multiple openings on our board so it’s the perfect time to jump-in and get involved! The coming years promise to be exciting ones at the WHCA due to a number of ongoing and upcoming projects. As a board member, you’ll be among the first to know about future plans at the facility and lend a hand in our journey towards community prosperity and success.

WHCA Casino Fundraiser is THIS WEEKEND!

Howdy community members! Looking to give some of your time to help out the community? Maybe you made a New Years resolution to volunteer more? Or maybe you just want to be a part of a fun & exciting evening at a casino while getting in on a free meal! Well if any of those apply to you, consider volunteering for our Casino Fundraiser at Cowboy’s Casino!

We are just a few volunteers short of a full roster and ensuring this event’s success. We have received an extremely gracious outpouring of support this week, so lets continue the trend into the weekend.

If you’ve never done a casino night in the past, worry not. The WHCA and Cowboys highly value and appreciate our volunteers to the utmost degree, and we will guide you along the way. Staff is extremely helpful and will be more than happy to help out and answer any and all questions you may have.

Volunteer for Casino Night!

The WHCA will be hosting a Casino Night Fundraiser at Cowboy’s Casino the evenings of May 5th & 6th. In order for the casino to run smoothly and for us to make the most of our time there, we require a number of volunteers for supervising, running chips, cashiers, and more! There is a variety of shifts available for both the Sunday and the Monday nights, and at the time of this post we’ve managed to fill around half of the spots. If you’d like to see what positions and times are available, please stop by the office or the fitness club, give us a call, or send us an email and we will be happy to find you a role that fits your schedule!

We’ve tried to make the sign-up process as smooth as possible. All we’ll need is your name & phone number via either phone call, email, or form. You can also find a sign-up sheet in both the office and at the fitness club front desk. If there is a role/time taken that you had wanted, please feel free to sign-up as a backup. We understand that life happens and commitments fall through, so don’t sweat it!

Spring Programs are Right Around the Corner!

If you’re the type of person who likes to get outside to enjoy the nice spring weather and take part in a fun & competitive sport while you’re at it (which, let’s face it, is practically everyone!) then the WHCA can help you with that this coming spring! Registrations are now open for both the 2019 Spring Soccer & Tennis Lessons programming! Both of these programs are held outside at the WHCA and are accessible to a wide variety of age groups.

WHCA Soccer

Soccer at the WHCA kicks off April 23 for ages 3 to 12. Multiple programs available in the afternoons. Tennis Lessons

Spring Tennis lessons beginning April 29 are open for registration. With availability for ages 4 & up (including adult!), this is the perfect opportunity to get acquainted with the sport. Already on your way to being the next Wimbledon champion? Consider taking the intermediate & advanced lessons for adults. These lessons are taught by tennis pro Alicia Hampshire and you’re sure to leave the court a better player than when you stepped on. Neighbourhood Baby Connections Photo Shoot

Last week, the West Hillhurst Community Association came together with District 12 Photographics for a sample baby/ toddler shoot during the Neighbourhood Baby Connections program that runs each Wednesday at the WHCA. The attendees received one photographer chosen image FREE for their use! Check out the sample shots below!

Member Family Gym is BACK!

Friday Free Gym has now been in full swing the last couple weeks. This FREE member program happens Friday’s from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. and is full of fun for the whole family. Come on down for some good exercise, sport and games! Initially, the WHCA was offering the program every second Friday but we are announcing that it will now happen on a weekly basis.

We want to thank our family volunteers who have taken the time to host, supervise, monitor and cleanup on Friday’s to help ensure the program runs weekly.

Calgary’s Celebration of Sport

Calgary is hub for sport. From beginner level sports to professional teams and organization, the community is strong. Not only is the passion strong within the community, it is within those people and organizations that volunteer and give back the gift of sport to others.

As reported on the VisitCalgary website, “In support of sport in Calgary, The Celebration of Sport 2018 event recognizes the people and organizations that make Calgary an incredible world-class sports city.

This years event will be comprised of a late afternoon reception, short awards ceremony and an expert panel discussion on sport. The event will be memorable and offer excellent networking opportunities with athletes, sport organizations, business and community leaders, and government officials. More than 500 attendees are expected this year.

100% of proceeds from the event will go to support amateur sport in the city, and programs that encourage sport participation, like All Sport One Day.

The Calgary Stampede season is in full-swing! Get ready to party over the next nine days! Although the city seems to shut during it, there are always an extensive list of events, festivals and breakfast’s to attend. Don’t miss West Hillhurst Community Associations FREE public Stampede Breakfast!

Stampede Breakfast – Join your WHCA on July 12, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. as we celebrate the Calgary Stampede. Come on down for a FREE pancake breakfast, enjoy the entertainment and come visit with your neighbours. The BatterBoys will be serving pancakes, sausage, juice and more! Don’t miss it!
Pride: A Conversation – Join your WHCA as we celebrate Calgary Pride Week from August 24 – September 3, 2018. The WHCA will be hosting a informational presentation with professionals, LGTBQ+ community members and more, during a panel discussion about: Education/ information about sexual health and LGTBQ+ community, information on local resources and support groups and building rapport & inclusion within West Hillhurst and the LGTBQ+ community.
Taste of the Neighbourhood – 18+ ADULT-ONLY evening. Sample some of Calgary’s best local food and beverage options, bid on silent auction items and get lost in the high-stake mock casino games. This year, Taste of the Neighbourhood is sport themed. Wear your favourite jersey. The WHCA has also partnered up with the Calgary Food Bank and will be accepting non-perishable food donations at the event and throughout the month of September.
Village Brewery Rebate Month – The WHCA is still collecting your Village Brewery receipts until the end of June. Village Brewery, in collaboration with Federation of Calgary Communities, will give a 15% rebate to non-profit community associations from their total of collected receipts. Remember to bring them in!

Spruce Spring Festival

In collaboration with the Spruce Up the Neighbourhood event, the WHCA is having their family and kids Spring Festival. Not only will the community of West Hillhurst be sprucing up their community, but the WHCA will be offering:
