Junior STARSkate

The Junior STARSkate program is suitable for beginner level figure skaters and staring out in the figure skating sport. The group lessons focus on developing the necessary basic skating skills for Figure Skating in the disciplines of Skating Skills, FreeSkate (jumps, spins, field movements, stroking etc.), Ice Dancing, and Interpretive Skating. The Junior Development program is designed for skaters who have passed CanSkate Stage 3 or equivalent and would like to transition to Figure Skating STAR 1 level. Skaters at this level may choose to be in both the CanSkate program and the Junior Development program at the same time and will acquire their skating skills with the goal of completing STAR 1 level Skate Canada assessments.
On-ice training of jumps, spins, stroking, edges, turns, and musicality will be developed. Off-ice group training sessions improves the skaters’ flexibility, strength and coordination. Jumping technique, air positions, spin technique, spin positions and agility as well as general skating knowledge are taught in the off-ice portion of the program. Our model follows Skate Canada’s Long-Term Athlete Development Program and skaters have the opportunity to participate in Skate Canada Assessments and Competition events.
On-ice skating session consists of 1 hour group lesson time with a certified Skate Canada coach. Skaters at this level may take private lessons for the remainder of the ice session for individual training in the disciplines of FreeSkate (Jumps & Spins), Ice Dance and Skating Skills. Private lessons are available upon request for additional fees.
We strongly recommend skaters at this level take private lessons with a WHSC coach for building a customized training plan and managing your child’s overall skating training which may include but not limited to goal-setting, lessons, practices, assessments/tests, competitions and etc. You should discuss the skating schedule with a WHSC coach to determine the amount of lesson time and practice time for your child which may be dependent on the training plan and development goals.
Equipment Requirements:
- Proper fitting Figure Skates (very important for preventing foot/ankle injuries and for better skating progression).
- Hair tied back away from skater’s face.

INT/SR STARSkate (INT/SR STAR)

The Intermediate/Senior STARSkate is an excellent program for former Junior Development and Junior Star participants who are working towards STARSkate or CompetitiveSkate levels. This program is designed for skaters to develop their advanced figure skating skills and techniques to succeed in the national Skate Canada program who are currently in the STAR 4 or STAR 5 levels (Intermediate) and the STAR 6 level or higher (Senior).
Skaters in the Skate Canada INT/SR STARSkate Program may choose to remain in the STARSkate Program to continue taking assessments and honing learned skills or skaters may choose to enter competitions, while still taking Skate Canada tests. Some skaters may feel that they have progressed to a point where they may wish to enter the Skate Canada CompetitiveSkate Program or become involved in synchronized skating, evaluating/judging, coaching or participate as an adult or recreational skating member.
On-ice training focuses on developing intermediate to advanced skating skills including jumps, spins, footwork, field movements, basic stroking, edges & turns, musicality and performance skills. The CompetitiveSkate program is designed for all skaters who have progressed beyond the Int/Sr STARSkate program and show commitment, enthusiasm and potential to advance. This program is fit for skaters who wish to challenge their figure skating skills and has earned the opportunity to compete in Skate Canada’s qualifying competition events under the national competitive structure. WHSC offers all the necessary resources: plenty of ice times, strong team of coaching staffs, and off-ice programs.
Skaters enrolled in the competitive stream learn a variety of life skills as they progress up the competition ladder. Strong work ethics are emphasized during each day of training at WHSC as the coaches strive and encourage positive personality traits that will help carry these young athletes through their entire lives. Determination, dedication, commitment and the ability to act as role models for younger skaters will help them achieve excellence on and off the ice. Skaters may compete at Skate Canada Sectionals, Skate Canada Challenge, and/or the Canadian National Figure Skating Championships and may earn the chance to be selected to represent Canada internationally.

The Pre-CanSkate emphasizes a fun learning environment and an excellent start to learning the 3 fundamental areas of skating: Balance, Control and Agility. Skaters completing the Pre-CanSkate program may transition to the CanSkate program where further development of variety of basic skating skills in the 3 fundamental areas of skating can be mastered.
Each skater in this program will earn incentives while working on the nationally accredited Skate Canada Pre-CanSkate curriculum. Through the use of learning tools such as toys, engaging games and skills exercises, our certified Skate Canada coaches will guide participants through the basic skating movements in a group lesson format.
Skaters will be evaluated at the end of the skating term and receive a report card. Skaters have the opportunity to earn badges for the completion of the Pre-CanSkate level.
Upon completion of the Pre-CanSkate level, skaters may continue their development by registering in the CanSkate program.
Equipment Requirements:
- A CSA approved helmet is mandatory.

CanSkate

The CanPowerSkate program is designed for beginner skaters that focuses on the development in the 3 fundamental areas of skating: Balance, Control and Agility. Skaters will develop skating skills incorporating power and agility to set participants up for success in any ice sport such as hockey, ringette, figure skating, speed skating or recreational skating.
This program is delivered by certified Skate Canada coaches and focuses on skating in a fun and positive learning environment which encourages skaters to develop and acquire skating skills at their own pace. Engaging circuits and skills exercises along with game activities allowing skaters to learn in a motivating group lesson format. Skaters will be grouped according to age and skill level in order to receive the most valuable instruction as possible. On-ice skating session consists of warm-up, group lessons, fast track, fun group activity, and cool-down.
Skaters will be evaluated at the end of the skating term and receive a report card. Skaters have the opportunity to earn badges for each stage passed in the CanSkate levels. We strongly recommend skaters to register for multiple days for more ice time and better skating progression.
Skaters at the CanSkate stage 3 level or higher who are interested to transitioning to start their beginner figure skating group lessons may choose to be in both the CanSkate program and the Junior Development program at the same time. The Junior Development program is an introduction and beginner level figure skating taught in a group lesson format which emphasizes on developing the necessary basic skating skills for Figure Skating.
On-ice skating session consists of 45 minutes of group lesson time on Monday and Wednesday sessions and/or 1 hour of group lesson time on the Saturday session with a certified Skate Canada coach. Skaters at this level may take private lessons on the Junior STARSkate ice session for individual one-on-one training. Fees for Junior STARSkate ice sessions are separate and private lessons are available upon request for additional fees.

Skating skills, techniques and performance drills are instructed in a progressive format by our certified NCCP PowerSkating Skate Canada coaches.
CanPowerSkate – U13 / U15 CanPower

The U13 / U15 CanPowerSkate program is designed for experienced hockey and ringette players looking to level up their skating skills in a small-group format. This program focuses on developing the 3 fundamental areas of skating: Balance, Control and Agility and incorporates components of power and speed to develop well-rounded players. Skating skills, techniques and performance drills are instructed in a progressive format by our certified NCCP PowerSkating Skate Canada coaches.
All CanPowerSkate participants must have hockey skates, gloves, a hockey stick and a CSA approved helmet. Full equipment is optional.
CanPower Equipment Requirements:
- CSA approved helmet is mandatory.

The Adult & Teen Skate Program is growing in popularity and offers opportunities for Adult and Teen skaters to learn in group lessons format from basic to advanced levels of skating skills and movements and allows skaters to develop their skating in a fun, social environment.
On-ice delivery of skating skills will focus on improving and mastering the basic skating skills and skaters may progress to learn intermediate edges, turns, glides, field of moves and elements such as spins, jumps, spirals.
On-ice skating session consists of 45 minutes of group lesson time with a certified Skate Canada coach. Skaters at this level may take private lessons on the Adult Figure Skating ice session for individual one-on-one training. The Adult & Teen Skate Program is designed for Adult Figure Skating with previous figure skating experience to come practice and develop their skating in a fun and social environment.
On-ice private lessons to work on developing your skating skills are available from our certified Skate Canada coaches. Lessons will focus on improving and mastering the basic, intermediate and/or advanced figure skating skills including but not limited to edges, turns, glides, field of moves and elements such as spins, jumps, spirals. Adults have the opportunity to compete at Adult STARSkate competitions in this program.
On-ice skating session consists of individual practice time. Skaters at this level may take private lessons with a certified Skate Canada coach during the ice session for training in the disciplines of FreeSkate (Jumps & Spins), Ice Dance and Skating Skills. Private lessons are available upon request for additional fees.

Our Learn to Figure Skate program is designed to bridge beginner figure skaters moving up from Canskate with little to no figure skating experience (0-2 yrs). Skaters must have passed CanSkate Stage 3 or higher.This program will focus on continuing the development of skating fundamentals, while introducing skaters to the beginning stages of figure skating in the disciplines of skating skills, freeskate and ice dance.
Equipment Requirements:
- Mandatory CSA approved hockey helmet.
- Proper fitting Figure Skates (very important for preventing foot/ankle injuries and for better skating progression).
- Hair tied back away from skater’s face.
- Appropriate skating attire (skating dress or athletic wear are acceptable) and must have warm gloves with all fingers mobile (mittens not recommended).
